“He who has not Christmas in his heart will never find it under a tree.” – Roy L. Smith.

I think most of us have at some point found ourselves either thinking or saying, “It just doesn’t feel like Christmas.” That of course begs the question, what exactly does Christmas feel like? The true spirit of Christmas cannot be described as one feeling but rather a combination of many wonderful feelings. Feelings of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness and goodness, to name but a few. Unfortunately we can never fully experience any of these if they don’t reside within our hearts. Everything flows from our hearts. Our thoughts, words and actions, and so to our feelings.

Our hearts are like savings accounts. When we give love, act in love, speak in love, we are effectively depositing love into the savings accounts of our hearts. So the more love we show towards others the more love we will have in the savings accounts of our hearts. Having love in our hearts means we will be able to freely and fully enjoy the feeling of love. The same principle applies to joy, peace, patience, goodness etc. I think we can all agree that we need all of these and more for it to really feel like Christmas. That very special Christmas feeling starts in our very own hearts.

“It Is Christmas in the heart that puts Christmas in the air.” – W.T. Ellis.

Christmas is a special time. It is a time of coming together, a time of caring and sharing. A time for letting go of grudges, letting bygones be bygones and forgiving. A time of reflection and a time to focus on what really matters. A time for counting our blessings. A time of thanksgiving and gratitude. A time for reconnecting. A time for family. A time for friends. It is also a time of remembrance, when we take the time to think of and fondly remember all those near and dear to us who left this world behind and can longer spend Christmas with us. Their chairs are empty but we carry them in our hearts.

There is something about Christmas that makes us feel like anything is possible. Christmas is referred to as a magical time. People start to feel more hopeful and expectant. It is undoubtedly a glorious time. A time of cheerful celebration. Yet let us not lose sight of what Christmas is all about, what the real gift is and what/who we are, in actual fact, celebrating. Perhaps by doing so we will find ourselves being hopeful and expectant throughout the year. Maybe then we can hold on to the spirit of Christmas and live in a state of Christmas all year long. Miracles don’t only happen at Christmas, but we might only see them then because we are actually looking for them. The gift we have been given was never intended to benefit us only once a year, but rather every day of our lives.

“I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.” – Charles Dickens

Merry Christmas to all. May peace, goodwill and happiness be yours this Christmas and always.
